Streets, Bridges & the Clyde
Route overview
We will meet at Glasgow Cross and make our way towards the Clyde via the Bridgegate. From there, we will walk west along the river, passing the Custom House Quay graffiti wall and continuing beneath the Caledonian Railway Bridge. We will pass the Squiggly Bridge and follow the Broomielaw and Anderston Quay until we reach the Kingston Bridge. At the Kingston Bridge, we will turn inland and head north towards Sauchiehall Street. From there, we will make our way east through the city centre to the statue of Donald Dewar on Buchanan Street. We will then follow Buchanan Street south to St Enoch Square, where the walk will finish.
The walk finishes at St Enoch Square around 4:30 p.m..
Bad weather plan
1. Light rain / showers: run the normal route. The Clyde, wet paving, reflections and umbrellas arguably improve the photographic possibilities. 2. Persistent heavy rain: switch to a shorter “wet route”. Glasgow Cross → Bridgegate → Clyde → Custom House Quay → railway bridges → Jamaica Street → Central Station/Hielanman’s Umbrella → Gordon Street → Royal Exchange Square/GoMA → Princes Square → Buchanan Street → St Enoch Square.
Accessibility
The walk follows public streets and riverside paths and is predominantly on paved, generally level surfaces. The route includes road crossings, kerbs and areas of uneven paving, and some sections may be more difficult in wet weather. We aim to use step-free routes wherever practical, but cannot guarantee that every part of the walk will be fully accessible to all mobility aids. The walk is approximately 5 km / 3 miles and normally lasts around 2½ hours, including frequent stops for photography.
